To my Wife Agnes

A moth rests on the dedication page of William E. DeGarth's book, Painting the Sea. Agnes "Phoebe" deGarthe was a weaver and editor, born in 1906 in Cow Head, NL. As a young woman, Agnes moved to Halifax where she met Finnish artist, William deGarthe at a house party. Her obituary in the Halifax Chronicle describes him as her soulmate. In Nova Scotia, William deGarthe's name and marine paintings are familiar and celebrated, but very little is known about Agnes or her work. A search for her on the internet pulls up multiple images of William's paintings, but nothing of her weaving. Her obituary tells us that she considered Peggy's Cove, the muse for so nuch of her husband's work, to be her one home. Perhaps she is represented in those beloved compositions. William dedicated his book, Painting the Sea, to Agnes.

Caught in a NetFlocks of starlings gather noisily in a tree by the Habitant river. After a beat of silence, we hear the sound of air drawing upwards in a massive inhalation. The flocks push out of the tree in one undulating rush. I crouch on the gravel road, between a river and a field, briefly caught in a pulsing net, then left to the quiet evening. Archival giclée print on Hahnemühle's William Turner, 100% cotton paper.
